Traditional brick and stone

Traditional style architecture has always boasted stone and brick of varying sizes, textures and colours. Brick and stone have traditionally been used for the exterior parts of the building, but over the passage of time, we have come to appreciate the natural beauty of brick and stone for the interior of our properties too.

Brick and stone are very successfully incorporated in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or living room too. Although both brick and stone are considered cold to the touch, with modern central heating, they can take in and store a certain amount of heat, while making the room take on a unique and traditional appearance.

Inside the home, particularly the kitchen, brick and stone may look absolutely amazing, but it does have a major drawback, it is very easy to attract grease and grime and even more difficult to clean.

With a brick or stone toughened glass splashback from Splashbacks of Distinction, you get the very best of both worlds. You get to enjoy the natural beauty of brick and stone, but as it is an incredibly true to life image, captured in one of our toughened glass splashbacks, you will never have to spend hours on end scrubbing it. A quick wipe over and it will come up sparkling like new.

Brick and stone for that authentic look

Up until now, brick and stone have been reserved for the more rural locations. We tend to conjure up a Yorkshire village with a pub and a post office all clad in stone. Farmhouses with brick fireplaces and cooking ranges beneath a brick or stone mantle look wonderful and homely, but will this look look right in a modern town house? The simple answer is yes!

The need to have traditional furnishings and appliances around the modern home is more common now than it was a few years ago. Consider the amount of kitchen appliances that have adopted a more vintage traditional appearance in recent years. Food mixers, kettles, fridges and freezers, kitchen dressers and of course, brick and stone have caught on in a big way.

It really is like we crave the traditional in and around our homes. It could be that we recall the lovely homeliness that our childhood memories bring when we think about our grans cottage, or the simplicity that the more traditional home seemed to offer. It takes us away from the often stark, modern lines and pressures of modern living and transports us back to a time when things seemed more relaxed, slower paced and simple.

Brick and stone: Tradition meets the present

If you think you have to have a country cottage look throughout you home to be able to get away with having the look of brick and stone, think again. The traditional look that brick and stone can bring looks absolutely amazing when combined with new stainless steel and glass furnishings and fixtures. Even a thoroughly modern range cooker with digital controls will look amazing when surrounded by a traditional looking toughened glass splashback with a brick or stone finish.

You really don't need timber beams and solid dark oak kitchen cupboards to benefit from the natural beauty of brick and stone. The very latest modern looking fitted kitchens will look absolutely fantastic with the traditional brick or stone finished glass splashback and the marriage of new and old doesn't have to stop in the kitchen either.

Brick and stone splashbacks for the bathroom

Bathrooms are a very popular place for the natural beauty of brick and stone. Stone mosaic tiles have been very popular for many years and many have had them fitted to toilets and bathrooms. A favourite location to have a stone mosaic is in the shower.

Again, the marriage of old and new works perfectly in this setting, the stone tiles take on an even more beautiful appearance when wet, but like in the kitchen, there are certain issues.

Because stone and brick is porous, you would need to have them professionally sealed to keep them looking good and this would need to be repeated on occasion to maintain the sealed surface. Coloured products such as make up and particularly hair dye would totally ruin the stone surface and it's unlikely that the stain could ever be removed. A brick or stone glass splashback would shrug off any of these stains with ease because the surface is ultra smooth glass and is impervious to any staining.

Brick and stone splashbacks for the living room

Imagine a spectacular stone wall behind a modern fireplace. This can offer you the look of a house deep in the countryside, but you may be in the centre of a town or city. An alcove may benefit from the look of natural stone or brick, just without the problems associated with cleaning this type of surface.

Sometimes an entire side of a room can be covered in brick or stone to great effect, with the other three sides being wallpapered or painted. This is another example of the perfect marriage of the modern with the traditional.

Because Splashbacks of Distiction specialise in all things glass, we can fit our seemless splashbacks anywhere in your home. The most common place being the kitchen as a hygienic splashback to protect the wall from splashes and heat from cooking. The bathroom, toilet and living room will look just as good with a splashback in glass with the brick or stone finish of your choice.

Let your imagination go wild with brick and stone

Consider the many possibilities for that perfect brick or stone effect anywhere in your home. You could choose a classic marble effect or a rustic Cotswold stone wall effect. You may even want a more up to date arrangement of thin slivers of stacked slate incorporated into your new glass splashback. But rest assured, whatever type of stone or brick finish you choose for your new glass splashback, we will ensure that you end up with a finished product that will last for many years and look good for as long as it is fitted.
